The only items excluded from Spotlight are external drives that I use for back-up and storing my music. Spotlight is set to index my entire internal SSD. This problem is not related to Spotlight privacy settings. If I click on "This Mac", search results appear immediately. When a search is active in a finder window, an option appears to search "This Mac". (So, yes, Spotlight has indexed the drive.)īut if I navigate to a folder in a Finder window and enter a term in the search field in the window, Spotlight returns nothing. If I do a Spotlight search at the top level ("This Mac"), Spotlight returns results instantly. So now I have a new MBP, and it's running great - except that Spotlight still won't search within folders. (That was painful, because the previous Mac was less than 2 years old.) At that time I was having several other problems with my Mac (most notably, frequent kernel panics), and I thought that maybe there was some unique bug deep inside my Mac, so I finally broke down and bought a brand new M1 MacBook Pro. In Spotlight settings I have checked every box for the kind of searches that Spotlight does and I have excluded external drives from searches. I have made sure that Spotlight has fully indexed the drive. I have restarted the computer many times. I have this problem with Spotlight searches within folders at any level in the folder hierarchy except for searches for the entire Mac. I can't think of any changes I made to the computer that would have caused this. These "focused searches" worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. I want to be able to do focused searches within folders. Spotlight responds to that and returns results instantly – but I get a lot of irrelevant results because it searched the entire computer. There is a button called "Mac" in the title bar of the window that I can click on to search the entire computer. I'll click in the "Find" field in the upper right corner of the window (or hit Cmd-F) and will search for something that I know is in the folder - and the search returns no results. I need to find a file that is specific to that project. I'll open window on my desktop for a folder for a project I'm working on. Spotlight refuses to do searches within folders.
